Trouble Brewing Between USL and Team Owners

USLNews recieved this press release this afternoon:

TEAM OWNERS ASSOCIATION CHILLS RELATIONS WITH USL AFTER NIKE SELLS USL TO NON-TEAM THIRD PARTY

Atlanta, Carolina, Miami, Minnesota, Montreal, St. Louis, Tampa and Vancouver to Aggressively Explore all Options for Future

August 31, 2009 Following extensive negotiations with USISL, Inc., the parent company of the United Soccer Leagues (USL), to restructure the USL First Division (USL-1) into a league owned and controlled by its teams, the Team Owners Association (TOA) today announced that it has accelerated its pursuit of all league options for the 2010 season and beyond. The TOA, led by the Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina RailHawks, Miami FC, Minnesota Thunder, Montreal Impact, St. Louis Soccer United, Tampa Bay Rowdies and Vancouver Whitecaps, reached this decision following the announcement by Nike, Inc., the parent company of USISL, Inc., that it had concluded the sale of USL to a third-party (NuRock Soccer Holdings) which does not own a team in USL-1.

The TOA has been and remains committed to a restructuring of USL-1 into a truly professional soccer league which complies with the international rules established by FIFA, the governing body of international soccer. These rules include the requirement that the league be owned and controlled by its teams. Despite this rule, USL has historically been owned by a single corporate entity responsible for, among other things, league governance. The TOA believes that this ownership structure has stunted the growth and recognition of both the league and its teams during USL’s nearly 25-year existence. Consequently, over the past several years, the TOA has engaged in discussions with the owners of USL to restructure USL and is therefore extremely disappointed with Nike’s decision to sell USL to a non-USL-1 team owner. Accordingly, the TOA now reconfirms its commitment to achieving a team-owner controlled league and will pursue all avenues to do so.

“The TOA and its teams thank the fans, media, coaches and players for their unconditional support and patience as we explore all options for the future,” stated Selby Wellman, majority owner of the Carolina RailHawks and spokesperson for the TOA. “The teams are confident that this process will lead to decisions and changes that are essential for the further growth of soccer in our respective markets and throughout North America.”

Richmond Claims 2009 USL-2 Championship

uslsoccer.com

For one hour on Saturday night, the Charlotte Eagles looked poised to erase the memory of their previous two defeats in the 2006 and 2008 USL-2 Championship match. Both times, the Eagles had fallen behind early and despite late rallies, they had come up short twice. This time, the Eagles scored first but were unable to hold off the surging Richmond Kickers, as Edson Elcock equalised in the 63rd minute and John DiRaimondo and David Bulow scored in the final 7 minutes of the match to claim the match and the championship with a 3-1 victory.

This is Richmond's second USL-2 title and the first since 2006.

Puerto Rico Continues Champions League Campaign Today

After dispatching Toronto FC of Major League Soccer to earn their place in the 2009/10 CONCACAF Champions League Group Stages, the Islanders turn their attention to another MLS foe as they face the Columbus Crew tonight at Crew Stadium. Puerto Rico is looking to repeat their from last season's CCL tournament that saw them within penalty kicks of the Champions League final.

To have a chance to match or better their result, Puerto Rico will have to get through a tough Group C that includes tonight's opponent Columbus, Saprissa (Costa Rica) and Cruz Azul (Mexico). Cruz Azul knocked the Islanders out of last year's tournament in the semifinals so you can expect Colin Clarke's side to be excited about the opportunity to get some payback.

Riverhounds Claim a 1-0 win over CP Baltimore

Official Press Release (Pittsburgh Riverounds)

Season Finale A Success On The Pitch And At The Gate

Neither the Pittsburgh Riverhounds nor Crystal Palace Baltimore had any possibility of making the United Soccer Leagues Second Division playoffs, so only pride and perhaps future employment were on the line when they met Saturday night in the final match of the year for both sides at Chartiers Valley Stadium in the South Hills. The Hounds earned a hard fought 1-0 win. The Riverhounds finished the season in 8th place in the nine-team USL-2 loop with a disappointing 6-10-4 record (22-points). CP Baltimore ended its year at 6-9-5 (23-points).

Pittsburgh’s playoff hopes had been dashed a week earlier with their 3-1 home loss to Charlotte. Baltimore was eliminated when Real Maryland defeated Harrisburg last Wednesday. Despite that, their match drew 2,151 fans.

Pittsburgh goalkeeper Danny Waltman had to go to work early. In the 5th minute, CP Baltimore’s Ryan Pierce weaved his way through the Hounds’ defensive third and got off a direct shot from about 15 yards out. The low drive was scooped up by Waltman for the first save of the match.

Hounds’ striker Bill Brindley took a shot from the left wing that forced Baltimore goalkeeper Billy Chiles to make a move to the right, and on the ensuing attack, Jeff Hughes carried the ball into the Palace area. However Joe Zewe was not sufficiently squared to the goal and his blast careened out past the left upright in the 9th minute.

The Hounds got the game’s lone goal on a set piece. Jeff Hughes launched a throw-in from about 30 yards away from the left touch line. The ball sailed tall and long to just outside of the goal box where Brindley leaped and headed the ball to the top right side of the CP Baltimore nets to take a 1-0 advantage.

Crystal Palace Baltimore had a trio of chances in the 28th, 29th, and 30th minutes, but Val Teixera, who took a cross from the right, could not head the ball in as Allan Brown marked him and the ball squirted to Waltman. On a follow-up attack, Machel Millwood’s drive was off-target. In the 31st minute, Shintaro Harada played a ball perfectly from right to left onto the foot of Dan Lader, but his weak shot was claimed by Waltman.

On a Pittsburgh attack in the Baltimore end in the 40th minute, Joe Zewe’s one-timer sailed over the goal. That’s when Chiles, who was stretched out during several plays in goal, began to suffer cramps on the steamy 88 degree evening.

Brian Rowland, who played in and started nearly all of the Palace’s games in 2009 was subbed-in in the 43rd minute and stopped a Jeff Hughes onslaught in stoppage time. CP Baltimore had one final attack before the whistle blew, but Millwood’s one-timer flew high and away.

Baltimore started the second half with a blazing attack lead by Brian Seabrook’s strong gallop up the right side in the 48th minute. Waltman was forced to speed off of his line and drive to Seabrook’s feet to stop the ball before the possibility of a strike. Waltman went low for the grab, while Seabrook went high and flipped. It was a brilliant save by Pittsburgh’s keeper. Pittsburgh was close twice again as the 50th minute approached, but Hughes, who became the Hounds’ most exciting player in the second half of the season, could not finish off two strong attacks.

Waltman made another great save on a Val Teixera rocket in the 55th minute, and on the counter attack, Tommy Gray was stuffed by Rowland.

CP Baltimore just missed on a corner kick in the 59th minute when the ball rolled off of the toe of Millwood who was spotted at the left post.

An almost out of control Hughes, stumbling on a flying breakaway, zipped a shot on goal that was slapped to the grass by Rowland in the 70th minute.

Starting with a dozen minutes remaining, the Riverhounds had four solid attacks, but shots by Mount Lebanon native Matt Langton, Gray, and Tony Labudovski failed to hit the mark, and a cross on a fast break up the left side by Brindley failed to connect.

Desperate to get the tying goal, the Palace’s Teixera carried the ball to the right post, but Waltman smothered it. Baltimore got another shot off, from about 25 yards out in stoppage time, but Millwood’s ball bent wide to the left, and the Riverhounds held on for a 1-0 victory.

Along with capping the 2009 campaign, Saturday served as Fan Appreciation Night, during which those in attendance were awarded Riverhounds’ game-worn gear including the jerseys off of the players’ backs.

It was also Riverhounds’ Youth Academy Night. All member-participants of the Academy led both sides onto the pitch before the game. Among the Academy participants were 40 campers from the Lawrenceville section of the City of Pittsburgh. A Lenzner bus transported them to and from the stadium courtesy of the Riverhounds and Soccer In The Community – Lawrenceville Camp Day, a program generously underwritten by Bayer USA Foundation. Each member of the Lawrenceville contingent also received food and a special event T-shirt. The program was created by James Meara and Mark Taylor of Soccer In The Community and proudly supported by the Bayer USA Foundation’s Dana Scarpino.

The TBR Mailbag, Vol. 2

The TBR Mailbag is a bi-weekly feature brought to you by the TBR front office to allow you, the fans, to write in and ask questions about the team, organization, and the return of professional soccer to Tampa Bay. If you have any questions you would like answered, please email us at mailbag@tbrowdies.com.

We have some great questions this week and wanted to thank everyone who took the time to write us. We will be doing our best to answer all of your questions, highlighting some in the bi-weekly TBR Mailbag feature.

We took this week’s questions to our staff to answer, including going back to team Owner and President Andrew Nestor. We look forward to hearing from more of you, and discussing things further with all of you on the message board.

Q: Mr. Nestor, with you taking over responsibilities of GM for the team, could you tell us more about the GM role and qualifications?
AN: There are several aspects of the General Manager position with the two most important tasks being (1) management of soccer and player development operations, and (2) coach and player contract negotiations.

As discussed in the last mailbag, I will be working with our Technical Director, Perry Van Der Beck, and ownership group to hire our head coach. We will then develop our sporting philosophy dictating the type of players we sign, our training curriculum and our player development initiatives.

I will oversee our coaching staff’s efforts in building out our scouting program and, on an ongoing basis, oversee our coaching staff’s leadership and training of our pro club and academy.

I have personal background and knowledge of player and team training through my playing experience and fitness / sports training experience as well. I have a deep understanding of player development options and regulations, as well as the US and foreign soccer markets. I will lean on our soccer and sports medicine experts for recommendations.

I will be the point of contact for all player agents, soccer clubs, and TBR player development affiliates, negotiating player contracts, player loans, and affiliation partnership structures. Van Der Beck and our coaching staff scout players inside and outside of our organization and make player recommendations. I will negotiate player contracts based on our staff’s recommendations using our “secret sauce” and considering the overall marketplace.

I have a finance / investment banking background that has prepared me for this role, including private equity acquisition lending in the hospitality sector, extensive private offering and valuation structuring, and M&A analysis. Our Chairman, Hinds Howard, who I work with to develop team budgets, has experience including primary analysis of a $1+ billion hedge fund, portfolio management, and investment banking experience.

Q: As a season ticket deposit holder when will we be getting updates on how we can purchase season tickets, and where can we buy Rowdies merchandise?
TBR: Once we publically announce our playing venue, we will release the official seating chart and pricing. TBR will directly contact all season ticket depositors to discuss ticket options. We will host a meet-your-seat day for depositors at the stadium to actually see the field and seating lay out and meet our staff.

Merchandise will be available again soon. Merchandise will be available through the website and brick-and-mortar locations. We are currently developing a new private-label online store with a broad array of high-quality products. We are also working with local retail stores to make sure that you will be able to find merchandise at your favorite local shops.

Q: Would the Rowdies be interested in sponsoring our team/event/organization?
TBR: As an organization we are looking forward to being an active member of the Tampa Bay community. We have already been involved in many events, from YMCA camps, school and PTA events, soccer tournaments, and partnering with area charities. We are always looking to get involved where we can. With that said it is not possible for us to sponsor every event. If you have a team/event/organization you would like the Rowdies to be a part of, please contact Andrew Suggs at partnerships@tbrowdies.com.

Q: Will there be any future watch parties or gatherings where we can meet the owners?
TBR: As things progress, there are plans for many different watch parties and events where there will be the chance to meet fellow soccer supporters, TBR Owners, players, management and staff. Events will be held throughout the Tampa Bay area in various traditional and nontraditional venues. As an organization, we look forward to meeting as many fans as possible. We will host several different events this fall as we gear up toward next season, including meet-your-seat night at the stadium for season ticket holders, nights to meet and interact with players and coaches, a jersey premiere party, US National team viewing parties, regular Rowdies Pub Nights, soccer beach days and more. Stay tuned for more details.

Pali Blues Win Second Straight W-League Championship

Official Press Release (Pali Blues)

Blues Defeat Washington Freedom in Title Game, 2-1

Boyds, Md. (Friday, August 7, 2009) – Drama surrounded nearly every minute of the 2009 championship game of the USL W-League tonight at the Maryland SoccerPlex, but the end result was the same as that of the 2008 finale. Behind an 82nd minute game-winner by championship MVP Iris Mora, the Pali Blues Soccer Club prevailed despite the visiting club to take their second consecutive USL W-League title is as many years of their existence.

“It feels so good to have two undefeated seasons, and I am so happy for our girls,” Pali head Charlie Naimo commented after taking his third crown as a coach in four championship appearances. “It’s such a fantastic feeling, and you couldn’t ask for anymore effort than what has been given by this team all year.”

Playing the role of the road warriors, the Blues completed their second cross-country trip in less than a week to battle for their second consecutive W-League title tonight at the home stadium of the Freedom. There was an early scare for Pali in the second minute of this contest when a deflected shot trailed toward an open net, but defender Jenny Anderson-Hammond was there to clear away the trouble.

The scoring in this match was opened in the 13th minute after a called foul gave Washington a free kick opportunity outside the 18. Standing over the ball was Freedom midfielder Sandra Matute, and she bent a well-struck ball around the defensive wall and into the net to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. While the tally gave a jolt of energy to Washington, the Blues remained determined and saw their efforts pay off in the 37th minute. After Mora saw a cleverly bending corner kick attempt get punched away by Freedom netminder Eliza Bennett Hattan, Pali was awarded a second corner. Mora again put the ball into play, only this time defender Kendal Billingsley was there to equalize for the defending league champions. With the count even at one each at the midway mark, these two clubs would hold that mark heading into intermission.

The intensity was increasing with every passing tick of the clock in the second half, and everyone with their eyes on this championship match was being treated to a fantastic affair. The Blues stayed on the offensive when they got the ball at their feet, and the drama of this match reached its pinnacle in the 86th minute. Midfielder Kristy Yallop gained possession on the right flank and delivered a cross to the middle of the field. On the receiving end of the feed was Mora, and the Mexican National Team striker quickly pounded home the game-winner.

The final minutes of the contest did not come without issue, but Pali protected their end of the field to secure their second straight championship. With the win, the Blues run their unbeaten streak in the W-League to 29 games, capping off their 2009 postseason with a travel regimen that included nearly 12,000 miles of travel.

Next up on the forefront for the Pali Blues is the support of their sister-club, the Los Angeles Sol, in the inaugural championship game of the Women’s Professional Soccer on Saturday, August 22nd. As far as the Pali players are concerned, some head back to college while others look to get their shot in WPS. For all of the latest info on the two-time defending W-League champions, stay tuned to the team website at www.bluessoccerclub.com.

Johansson, Taylor React to League Honors

Official Press Release (Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues)

NEWBURGH, NY – Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues forward Angelika Johansson was named the 2009 W-League Most Valuable Player and defender Brittany Taylor was named 2009 W-League Defender of the Year on Wednesday, culminating a successful first season for the Lady Blues.

Now, two days later, Taylor and Johansson have had some time to let the awards sink in.

"It's pretty cool," Taylor said. "Mostly it's just a good feeling that after coming off of my injury with all the hard work and everything that it kind of feels like it paid off and it kind of feels like I am back where I was before this happened."

Taylor tore her ACL in May of 2008, keeping her on the sidelines for almost a full year up until the Lady Blues kicked off their season this May. The award is great, she said, but nothing like a championship.

"It's good and I am happy about it but it's still kind of not as exciting as if we won and it came along with it," Taylor said. "I think that it still feels like something is missing because we didn't end up going through as finalists."

Taylor said that without the collective efforts of the team, the awards never would have been possible, a statement that Johansson echoed.

"It is a team award," Johansson said. "Without the team I wouldn't have been able to play like I did this season. My team is just the big part of it."

Both players are also big fans of each other.

"Brittany is an amazing player," Johansson said. "She's got amazing technique, she sees the plays in a way I wish I could too. She's a great leader and she was a big part of us winning this year."

Taylor has said it before, and she wasn't joking: She truly admires Johansson's play.

"I've never been able to play with someone like that, that has so much energy and works that hard," Taylor said. "She's not the biggest kid on the field, she's not the most technical kid on the field, but no matter what she always gets it done somehow."

Now, the two players return to college on their respective quests for NCAA glory. Taylor enters the fall as a redshirt senior at the University of Connecticut after missing last year due to injury, while Johansson will be a junior at Division II power Franklin Pierce University.

The Islanders Have Done it Again!

But this time Puerto Rico beat an MLS team in CONCACAF play, once again reigniting a debate which MLS apologists do not want to have.

I have to say I am somewhat offended that many of my colleagues and friends in the soccer blogger community have seemingly chosen to ignore the success of USL sides in CONCACAF competition while continuing to discuss MLS’ failures in a vacuum. Football writers in England and Germany do not ignore their second divisions entirely and do not simply make assumptions about a product’s quality without watching it or trying to understand it. The dismissive attitude of many towards USL this year has been shocking: the assumption during the early rounds of the US Open Cup every year is that USL sides were essentially semi pro teams and that any loss by MLS teams was on them, not due to the quality of play from USL. As one who follows both leagues closely I can tell you while the most individually talented players are in MLS, USL-1 has a quality to it unknown to MLS, something which both Puerto Rico and Montreal demonstrated in their CONCACAF triumphs last year: valuable midfield possession play and strong organization at the back. Yet, USL sides lack the flair and quality in the final third to be as dangerous as MLS sides.

I’d urge my colleagues in the soccer blogger community and media to pay more attention to USL-1. Sure the games aren’t played in the sexy venues and you don’t have a commissioner that likes to shoot off his mouth in(over) selling the quality of his league, but the football itself is very revealing. While they are at it, they need to pay more attention to the overall structure of USL, starting with USL-1 but working its way down through USL-2, the PDL (which has sent two players to Everton this summer) and on down thru the Super 20 and Super Y league. They could actually learn a great deal about American soccer and how it works from following USL.

Puerto Rico Islanders Eliminate Toronto FC from CCL

USL > MLS ?

After stealing a 1-0 road victory last week, the Puerto Rico Islanders returned home and took care of busines in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League qualifier. The nil-nil draw on Tuesday night means Puerto Rico will move on to the group stages of the tournament while Toronto FC is out as another MLS team fails to make any impact in the tournament. Puerto Rico came within PKs of advancing to the inaugural CCL Final last season and will look to repeat their success in this year's tournament.

Pali Blues Advance to W-League Championship

Official Press Release (Pali Blues Soccer Club)

Blues Defeat Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues, 4-0

Newburgh, N.Y. (Friday, July 31, 2009) - The Pali Blues Soccer Club showed why they are the defending USL W-League champions tonight at Newburgh Free Academy, defeating the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues by a tally of 4-0. With a well-balanced effort in every phase of the game, the Blues now advance to their second straight league championship game next weekend.

"It took us a while to get going at the beginning of the year, but all that matters is how you end the season. It's humbling to be around this group of girls, and I'm just happy to see them achieving this kind of success." Blues head coach Charlie Naimo commented after the victory, sending him to his fourth W-League championship game as a coach and second straight since moving to the West Coast.

Rain poured down on the Hudson Valley for much of the day, but calm weather conditions fought their way into Newburgh to greet these two clubs with a perfect environment for playoff soccer by the time of kickoff. Blues goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris was tested early when the Quickstrike attack was able to create some opportunities in the opening minutes of this contest, but she and her defense did well to weather that early storm.

The Blues regrouped after that early push by Hudson Valley, and they very quickly engaged a shift in the offensive momentum. They began to get off some quality shots toward their target, and their aggressive play paid dividends in the 14th minute of the match. It was then that midfielder Christen Press collected the ball on the right flank and sent a hard strike over to Jodie Taylor in the center of the field. Taylor then weaved her way through traffic until seeing her opening from more than 30 yards out, and she then launched a bomb past the outstretched arms of Quickstrike netminder Ashley Thompson to give the defending W-League champions a 1-0 advantage.

The Blues continued to display their high level of class throughout the remainder of the opening half, and Mexican National Team forward Iris Mora was able to stretch the gap to 2-0 in the 45th minute of the game. The All-Western Conference selection received a feed from Press on the right wing and capitalized on the room she was afforded by the Hudson Valley defense. From 25 yards out, she struck a powerful volley into the back of the net to give her team a two goal lead going into intermission.

The Blues kept their foot on the throttle when the second half of action got started, and Mora made the most of being given too much space once again in the 50th minute. Making a run on the right wing, she one-touched a cross to the middle of the field, and midfielder Kelley O'Hara fought off a pair of Quickstrike defenders to punch in the third Blues goal of the evening.

Hudson Valley continued to battle, and forward Angelika Johansson nearly got Quickstrike on the board when she created a 1v1 chance for herself in the 59th minute. As soon as she saw Johansson break free, Harris came out from her post to make a spectacular diving save to stop the run and keep the slate clean. Rewarding their goalkeeper for her efforts, the Blues made it 4-0 in the 65th minute when Mora set up a Lauren Cheney tally. From that point forward, the Blues defense buckled down to complete the shutout.

"We saw when they came out that they were motivated," Mora said after the game. "We knew we had to stay composed and defend on both ends of the field. We played like a team and a unit out there, and I'm just so proud of all my teammates."

The win extends the Blues unbeaten streak to 28 games and advances them to their second title appearance in as many years of existence. The Blues now await the winner of a Saturday night pairing between the Ottawa Fury and Washington Freedom.

Pali Tops Lady Blues, Advances to Title Game

Official Press Release (Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues)

NEWBURGH, NY - The Pali Blues defeated the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues 4-0 on Friday in a W-League Semifinal match that featured a battle of unbeatens.

The win means that Pali advances to the W-League Championship to defend its 2008 title against the winner of the other semifinal between Washington and Ottawa Saturday night. Both teams entered the game unbeaten, meaning Pali has not lost in its 28 games in two years as a franchise, while the Lady Blues suffered their first-ever defeat.

The Lady Blues started off the game strong, with defender Katie Kelly hitting the crossbar in the 1st minute and forward Abby Carr coming close on a deflected shot in the 3rd minute. Several scrambles ensued in front of the Pali goal, but the Lady Blues could not find the back of the net.

Then, midfielder Jodie Taylor opened the scoring for Pali in the 14th minute with a world-class goal. She dribbled through the heart of the Hudson Valley midfield and fired a strike from 30 yards out that beat Lady Blues goalkeeper Ashley Thompson and pinged off of the post and into the net.

Iris Mora then doubled the visitors' lead in the 45th minute when she chipped Thompson from 35 yards out. The goal gave Pali a 2-0 lead on the stroke of halftime.

Both teams had good chances in the first half, but only Pali could finish them.

"This past week in training we really focused a lot on mentality and intensity and coming out in the first five minutes and really setting a tone and I think that that's what we did and we just didn't put our opportunities away to start with," Hudson Valley midfielder Brittany Taylor said.

The hosts could not contain the Western Conference champions, though. Kelley O'Hara put the game all but out of reach in just the 50th minute when she gave Pali a 3-0 advantage.

U.S. international and 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Lauren Cheney iced the game for the visitors with a goal in the 65th minute to make it 4-0. She tapped in a beautiful cross from Mora, who wreaked havoc on the Hudson Valley's defense all night.

"I'm very proud of the girls," Quickstrike Lady Blues Head Coach Jesse Kolmel said. "They had a great season. The difference tonight is a proven championship team executed on those opportunities when they had them. We had those opportunities early and didn't execute and at this level the difference is finishing those great opportunities that we didn't take advantage."

Pali will now await the winner of the matchup between the Washington Freedom and Ottawa Fury to see which team they will play in the W-League Championship on Friday, August 7, at 7:30 p.m. on Fox Soccer Channel.
