The Mystery of the Missing PDL Matches: Solved!

After we were contacted by one of our readers concerning the fact that the two PDL matches schedule to air on USL Live over the weekend were not shown, we contacted USL Live and received this explanation:

Thanks for contacting us about this. We really wanted to show these games on USL Live, which is why the games were visible on the site until just before the first game on Friday, June 26. After conducting a remote test away from the Surge’s stadium everything seemed to be in place for a broadcast. However, once production crew arrived at the stadium it was deemed the internet connection was so slow (less than 150kbps) that it wouldn’t produce a clean stream.

Again, this was a difficult but there was simply no choice in the end. We will be working closely with the Surge and examine the possibility of streaming their home games on July 11 and July 15.

Best regards,

Seth Witkowicz

Darn technology.

Thanks to Seth from USLLive.com for getting back with us with the information.

Palmer Hat Trick Lifts Undefeated Quickstrike Lady Blues Over Long Island 4-2

Official Press Release

NEWBURGH, NY – The Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues defeated the Long Island Rough Riders behind a Whitney Palmer hat trick on Sunday to stay undefeated and atop the W-League Northeast Division.

Long Island opened the scoring in the 5th minute when Erin Pardini put the visitors ahead.

The lead, however, did not last very long. Just seconds later, still in the 5th minute, Lady Blues forward Angelika Johansson leveled the game at 1-1 after breaking through the Long Island defense following the kickoff.

“That’s this team,” Head Coach Jesse Kolmel said. “Within five seconds of them scoring on us we turn around and get one back, so I love the character of this team.”

Five minutes later, it was Whitney Palmer who gave the Hudson Valley a 2-1 lead after she flicked an Ashleigh Gunning corner kick inside of the near post.

The goal was the first of what became a hat trick for Palmer. She executed her blazing speed to perfection in both the 50th minute and the 82nd minute to seal the game for the Quickstrike Lady Blues (7-0-1, 22 pts.).

“It feels good,” Palmer said of her hat trick. “I was in a little slump for a while so it is exciting.”

Brooke DeRosa had the other goal for Long Island in the 29th minute, but it was not enough for the Rough Riders (5-5-1, 16 pts.).

Johansson’s goal was her ninth of the season and puts her into a tie for the league lead in goals. She also leads the league in points with 21.

“I’ve never played with anybody like her,” Palmer said about Johansson. “It feels great to play with somebody who I can work with and we have good chemistry on and off of the field.”

Now, the Quickstrike Lady Blues end the season on a tough road stretch. The Hudson Valley will play five of its final six games on the road. The final home game will take place on Wednesday, July 15 at 7:30 p.m. against the New Jersey Wildcats.

Scoring Summary:

Official Press Release

NEWBURGH, NY – The Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues look to stay atop the W-League Northeast Division on Sunday when they host the Long Island Rough Riders. The game kicks off at 5 p.m. at Academy Field on the campus of Newburgh Free Academy.

The Quickstrike Lady Blues (6-0-1, 19 pts.) enter the game undefeated in W-League play. Last Saturday, the Hudson Valley defeated Western Mass 1-0 to stay undefeated.

Long Island (5-3-1, 16 pts.) currently sits in third place in the Northeast Division, and will play the Wildcats on Saturday before making the trip up to Newburgh, NY.

The match is the second-to-last home game for the Quickstrike Lady Blues. After Sunday, the Hudson Valley plays five of its final six games on the road. The final home takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15 against New Jersey.

In honor of the United States Men’s National Team’s appearance in the FIFA Confederations Cup Final on Sunday, all fans wearing a U.S. National Team jersey will be admitted into the game for free.

Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues Weekly Update: June 23

The Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues defeated the Western Mass Lady Pioneers 1-0 on Saturday to stay undefeated and atop the W-League Northeast Division.

Angelika Johansson scored the game’s only goal in the 60th minute to help lift the Quickstrike Lady Blues. The goal was her eighth of the season, which ties her for the league lead.

Johansson was active all game and was unlucky not to have scored earlier. In the 25th minute, she flicked on a ball served by Ashleigh Gunning, but her shot went off of the crossbar. Then, Johansson had a penalty kick saved in the 30th minute that could have put the Hudson Valley ahead.

Western Mass seemed content to slow the game by getting numbers behind the ball, something that Quickstrike Lady Blues Head Coach Jesse Kolmel was very aware of.

“I think that a lot of teams are making the decision to sit in and make us play through them, so it is going to make games tighter,” he said.

Although the Quickstrike Lady Blues would have liked to have finished more chances, they were still able to make Johansson’s 60th minute goal stand to improve to 6-0-1 (19 pts.) on the season and stay in first place in the W-League Northeast Division.

Members of Sky Blue FC, including players and coaches, were also in attendance at Saturday’s game to take in the action of the Quickstrike Lady Blues, the W-League affiliate of Sky Blue FC.

Kelly Lindsey served as the honorary guest of the evening. Lindsey was recently named head coach of Sky Blue FC for the rest of the season after taking over on an interim basis on May 23.

Critical Week Awaits for Hudson Valley

Next, the Lady Blues travel to New Jersey on Friday night to take on the New Jersey Wildcats (4-3-1, 13 pts.) at 7 p.m at Mercer County Community College, which is near Princeton, NJ.

Then, they return home on Sunday, June 28 to take on the Long Island Lady Rough Riders at 5 p.m. at Newburgh Free Academy. Long Island is currently in second place in the Northeast Division, just three points behind the Quickstrike Lady Blues.

Fans can purchase tickets for the game at www.quickstrikefc.com. The match against Long Island will be the second to last home game of the season for the Quickstrike Lady Blues.

Quickstrike Lady Blues Announce Strategic Partnership with Hudson Valley Renegades

The Quickstrike Lady Blues are happy to announce that they have formed a strategic partnership with the Hudson Valley Renegades, the Short Season-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball.

The Renegades are known as the premier professional sports team in the Hudson Valley and the Quickstrike Lady Blues are excited to announce that they will be working with the Renegades on various avenues including tickets and promotions.

Further details will be announced in the near future.

Washington Freedom Game Rescheduled

The Quickstrike Lady Blues’ match with the Washington Freedom originally scheduled for Wednesday, June 10 has been rescheduled to Thursday, July 16 at 7 p.m. at the Germantown SoccerPlex in Boyds, MD.

The game was canceled on June 10 due to severe thunder and lightning in the greater Washington, DC area. After two hours of delays, the Quickstrike Lady Blues were forced to return home without playing the match.

The game will take place one day after the final home game for the Hudson Valley, which is against the New Jersey Wildcats on Wednesday, July 15 at 7 p.m.

“I think that a lot of teams are making the decision to sit in and make us play through them, so it is going to make games tighter,” he said.

Kolmel said that halftime adjustments did help improve the home side, but also noted that he was disappointed with how many chances went unfinished.

Quickstrike Lady Blues midfielder Erica Stewart – who wore one of the captain’s armbands on the evening – also felt that the home team got off to a slow start.

“I think we had a lot of momentum coming into this game,” she said. “We were really ready to bring a lot of energy and just go at them. We didn’t put enough focus on our attack right in the beginning. I think we were hesitant to just go at them in the beginning.”

Although the Quickstrike Lady Blues would have liked to have finished more chances, they were still able to make Johansson’s 60th minute goal stand to improve to 6-0-1 (19 pts.) on the season and stay in first place in the W-League Northeast Division.

Brian Quarstad on Inside Minnesota Soccer has posted an article detailing the reaction by Montréal Impact Supporters Group, Ultras Montréal, to their clubs horrendous display in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship finale against Toronto FC.

The Montréal supporters group, the Ultras have posted on their website that they plan to boycott the first half of Saturdays home game at Suputo Stadium. The Vancouver Whitecaps will be the Impacts opponent and will not be happy when they step onto the field today at 1:00 est.

Montréall fans are outraged at their teams performance and managers Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos, who chose to play a group of bench players in the Nutrilite Voyageurs Cup Championship on Thursday.

The Ultras has posted this statement on their website:

Following the disgraceful performance by the Impact of Montreal versus Toronto FC, the Montréal Ultras have decided to denounce this lack of respect towards the Montreal public. We invite all the members into 114 and to elsewhere support them in this step.

As our team decided to play only half a game last Thursday, the Montreal Ultra’s have decided to support them for only one half this Saturday when they play the Whitecaps of Vancouver. We will the Ultra’s will not present in the first half of the game.

We invite you to Brewery 99, where we will look at the first half together, before returning to the stadium in time for the second half.

Quickstrike Lady Blues: Taylor and DaCosta Finding Success at the International Level

Official Press Release

DaCosta, Taylor, Benefiting from Professional Environment Locally and Internationally

Newburgh, NY – For the past week, Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues midfielder Amanda DaCosta has been training with the United States U-23 National Team in Lorain, Ohio, a Northeast Ohio town that is home to the Premier Soccer Academies.

Amanda DaCosta

Training camp is going well for the team thus far. It defeated FC Indiana, one of the top W-League teams, 2-1 in one of the team’s camp friendlies.

While DaCosta has been to such training camps before, her recent experiences with the Quicktrike Lady Blues only helped elevate her game.

She is part of a player pool for the U.S. U-23 National Team that includes Quickstrike Lady Blues teammate Brittany Taylor, both of whom are Hudson Valley natives and developed through the Quickstrike FC youth system.

Brittany Taylor

Now, the two compete at the highest level of the Quickstrike FC program with the Lady Blues, and are being rewarded for their stellar play in one of the country’s toughest divisions. The high level of the Quickstrike Lady Blues (5-0-1, 16 pts, 1st in the Northeast Division) has helped prepare them for the international level.

“The intensity of our training sessions at Quickstrike has really aided me in the transition,” DaCosta said of her experience at training camp. “It’s hard for a lot of people when they go away on summer teams to keep that level and speed of play, so that was good that I have that.”

Taylor also feels that the Quickstrike Lady Blues as well as her time with Quickstrike FC youth teams has helped her in preparing for the national team. She was not at training camp in Ohio, but serves as the team’s captain.

“Being here, it definitely prepares myself and other players like Amanda to be in the same environment,” Taylor said. “It gives us the same professional environment – the level of training, different type of training, tactical sessions – basically the same breakdown of what goes on, even down to having team meals.”

Quickstrike Lady Blues Head Coach Jesse Kolmel said that the team’s model is based off of various different professional systems, including Sky Blue FC, the Hudson Valley’s parent team.

“At the end of the day, it is all about professionalism,” Kolmel said.

However, there is one key difference between the two situations. Now, two of the Hudson Valley’s best players can compete in front of their hometown crowd and get involved in the community.

“I think the only thing that is different, because we have time, is being able to reach out to the community,” Taylor said.

“I know if I were a young girl in the area I would be pretty inspired by that,” DaCosta said. “It’s a big role to take on. You have to know that you are always being watched and that you are always going to be a role model.”

Kolmel could not agree more and said that he could not think of two better role models for the Quickstrike Lady Blues.

“It’s easy as a coach to say ‘be like that player,’ but now they have this touchable force in front of them,” he said. “Most importantly, it is a female role model for these players.”

So, DaCosta knows that a lot will be expected of her when she returns home to the first-place Lady Blues. Meanwhile, she has the opportunity to be one of the youngest players on the U.S. U-23 National Team at the young age of 19.

Should she perform well enough, she could find herself alongside Taylor in London in July for a U-23 friendly tournament that will culminate the work of the team this spring. No matter where her or any Quickstrike Lady Blues player travels, they will always be appreciated at home.

“Personally I am very honored to work with such focused individuals such as them and it’s exciting to have them on the roster,” Kolmel said.

Here Come the Conspiracy Theories

Last night in the finale of the 2009 Nutrilite Canadian Championship, Toronto FC of Major League Soccer dismantled, annihilated and destroyed the Montreal Impact 6-1 to steal away a CONCACAF Champions League spot from the Vancouver Whitecaps. Even worse for the Caps was that the team was in the stands to witness Montreal's collapse that handed the Voyageurs Cup to Toronto.

Conspiracy theories will surely fly as Montreal manager Marc Dos Santos decided to field a "B" team made up mostly of subs and reserves. Montreal faces Vancouver in a USL league match over the weekend and this results will likely add some drama to their matchup.

Toronto FC will face the Puerto Rico Islanders in a CCL qualifier.

Andrew Buchholz on his blog Sporting Madness has a great write-up fallout for all three teams involved. Here is an excerpt of what Andrew had to say:

The seemingly-impossible 6-1 victory Toronto FC pulled off against the Montreal Impact tonight gives them the Voyageurs Cup, the one fact everyone can agree on. Apart from that, there's no clear lesson or moral to draw from this one, though. It means drastically different things to fans of all the teams involved, and there's no one right answer.

Montreal Looks to End Toronto FC's CCL Dreams Tonight

Toronto FC has a tough task in tonight's finale of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship. Defeat the Montral Impact by at least 4 goals or the Vancouver Whitecaps earn a spot in the 2009/10 CONCACAF Champions League. From a USL perspective, a victory by Montreal over an MLS club would help continue the USL's competitive play against the bigger league and ensure that one USL team would make the group stages of the CCL.

Quickstrike Lady Blues Tie Boston Renegades 1-1

Official Press Release

The Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues played the Boston Renegades to a 1-1 draw at Harvard Stadium on Wednesday.

Quickstrike Lady Blues midfielder Mercede Koning opened the scoring in just the 9th minute. Koning overlapped Kristen Edmonds and sent a cross toward forward Angelika Johansson.

Boston goalkeeper Laurel Peak came out to play the ball and was thrown off by Johansson’s run and misplayed it. Koning’s service then skipped over Peak and into the back of the net to give the visitor’s a 1-0 advantage.

The visitor’s almost doubled their advantage in the 17th minute when Kristen Edmonds collected an Ashleigh Gunning cross and fired it just over the bar.

Johansson and Alicia Tirelli then both had point-blank shots saved by Peak on the stroke of halftime. Johansson’s chance was the better of the two. She collected a flick-on from Whitney Palmer and tried to chip Peak, who got a finger tip on the ball and kept the game at 1-0 entering halftime.

Boston did not register a single shot on goal in the first half. The second half, however, was a much different story.

The Renegades scored a goal on their first shot on goal of the game when Brooke Knowlton scored for the home side to tie the game at 1-1.

Boston’s Melanie Booth then sent in a corner kick that skimmed off of the crossbar in the 69th minute to put a collective scare into the Quickstrike Lady Blues. Boston then dominated most of the second half against a tired Quickstrike Lady Blues team but could not find the go-ahead goal.

The Quickstrike Lady Blues now remain unbeaten and atop the W-League Northeast Division with a record of 5-0-1 (16 pts.). They return home on Saturday to face the Western Mass Lady Pioneers, a team that the Hudson Valley beat 3-1 on May 16.

Sky Blue FC players and coaches will be on hand to take in the game and sign autographs. The Quickstrike Lady Blues are the W-League affiliate of Sky Blue FC, which plays in Women’s Professional Soccer.

Scoring Summary:

HV 1 – 0 Boston, 9th minute: Goal: Mercede Koning (Assist: Kristen Edmonds)

HV 1 – 1 Boston, 64th minute: Goal: Brooke Knowlton

Team Records:

Hudson Valley: 5-0-1, 16 pts.; 1st place W-League Northeast Division

Boston: 4-2-2, 14 pts.; 2nd place W-League Northeast Division

Susan Lulgjuraj from The Press of Atlantic City is reporting that the Ocean City Barons are working directly with DC United to move the match from Germantown, MD to Ocean City, New Jersey.

Ocean City Barons president Giancarlo Granese said they are going to try and bid for the game, which boils down to giving D.C. United enough money to come to Ocean City.

Ocean City put in the initial bid with U.S. Soccer and was turned down. Now, the Barons are negotiating directly with D.C. United and cut out the middle man.

Whitecaps Duo Suspended One Match by USL, One Match by Club

Wesley Charles and Charles Gbeke of the Vancouver Whitecaps have both received a one match ban from the USL and an additional one match ban from the club for their unsportsmanlike behavior over the weekend against Miami FC. In addition, each player was fined an undisclosed amount by the Whitecaps.

Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi:

"As a club, we do not condone any violent conduct on or off the field, the events that took place near the end of Friday’s match are inexcusable and there are consequences the players must now face for their actions. Wesley and Charles are veteran players and have both taken full responsibility for their actions, are remorseful, and accept their discipline."

Wesley Charles:
"First and foremost, I want to apologize to the club for everything that happened, as it should never have happened and was very out of character for me, I also want to apologize to the fans and all of my teammates for letting them down on Friday night."

Charles Gbeke:
"I want to apologize to my teammates and coaches, as well as the whole Whitecaps organization, I especially want to apologize to the fans because we let them down. The fans have always been gracious and supportive of us, so I'm hoping for their forgiveness and that they give me a second chance. I hope we can grow out of this situation and become closer as a team."

Whitecaps head coach Teitur Thordarson:
"We have had a chance to speak with all involved parties and we are confident we can put the incident behind us, We are moving forward as a united team."

Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues Weekly Update: June 15

Official Press Release

NEWBURGH, NY – The Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues persevered to pull out a 1-0 victory over the Connecticut Passion on Friday night at Academy Field on the campus of Newburgh Free Academy.

Brittany Taylor scored the game’s only goal in the 56th minute when she settled an Ashleigh Gunning corner kick and placed the ball into the upper netting of the goal. The goal helped extend the Hudson Valley’s perfect start to the season to 5-0-0 (15 pts.).

The Quickstrike Lady Blues did not play their best game of the season, but were still able to extend their perfect record.

“This is the professional level,” head coach Jesse Kolmel said. “You are not always going to play perfect every game. The big adjustment was tempo.”

Fortunately for the Quickstrike Lady Blues, the direction of the game changed in the second half when the home team played more like they have been this season.

“In the second half the main thing we wanted to do was change the intensity and change the tempo of the game,” goal scorer Brittany Taylor said. “That created a lot more opportunities. The tempo itself opened things up.”

Big Week Awaits Quickstrike Lady Blues; Postgame Concert and Sky Blue FC Appearance at Saturday’s Home Game

The Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues (5-0-0, 15 pts.) next travel to Boston on Wednesday to take on the Boston Renegades, a team the Lady Blues beat 2-1 on June 6. The game kicks off at 4 p.m. and is the first game of a doubleheader at Harvard Stadium. The second match will be between Women’s Professional Soccer teams FC Gold Pride and the Boston Breakers.

Then, the Quickstrike Lady Blues return home on Saturday, June 20 at 7 p.m. against the Western Mass Lady Pioneers. Western Mass was the opponent for the Hudson Valley’s inaugural game on May 16, which the Lady Blues won 3-1 at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow, Mass.

Coaches and players from Sky Blue FC, the professional affiliate of the Quickstrike Lady Blues, will be in attendance to take in the game and sign autographs for fans. In recognition of Father’s Day, all dads will get in free.

There will also be a free postgame concert performed by New York City band, Ivry. The Band features singer/songwriter Henry Ivry. His first self-titled EP was released in July of 2008, and band members include Rob Giraldi (guitarist), Casey Chandler (bass) and Will Whatley (drums).

Ivry has performed all over the New York area, including headline at the legendary Bitter End, performed on multiple occasions at the famous Lower East Side venue Arlene's Grocery and played at the renowned Sullivan Hall on Cinco de Mayo 2009.

The music, written and arranged by Henry but reinterpreted through fellow band-mates, blends pop elements and the heart of neo-soul with the edge of rock and electro. Ivry, often compared stylistically as somewhere between Jeff Buckley and Stevie Wonder, hopes to bring a unique sound to the thriving East Coast indie scene and revitalize current pop with timeless influences that reflect through their music.

Johansson assisted on Whitney Palmer’s game-tying goal before scoring the game-winner for the Lady Blues in the 79th minute. The goal was her seventh of the season and helped keep the Hudson Valley undefeated.

The honor comes after Johansson was named to the W-League Team of the Week for the previous two weeks. She currently leads the league in goals (7) and points (17).

Washington Game Postponed

After traveling all the way to Boyds, MD on Wednesday afternoon for a game against the Washington Freedom, the Quickstrike Lady Blues were forced to return home without playing the match due to persistent severe thunderstorms in the greater Washington, D.C. area.

The Quickstrike Lady Blues and the Washington Freedom are working with the league to reschedule the game at an appropriate time for both teams. Further details will be released when available.

Gbeke and Charles face fines and suspension from USL and club

As we covered on Saturday, Vancouver Whitecaps teammates Charles Gbeke and Wesley Charles nearly came to blows during their match against Miami FC.

The USL will announce the player's punishment today. On Monday, Vancouver indefinitely suspended the two players pending USL review of the incident. Club president Bob Lenarduzzi said their will be additional fines/suspensions from the club in addition to whatever action the league takes.

"We are going to do something in addition to what the league does," said Caps' president Bob Lenarduzzi. "[Fines] will be enough that it will be an impact to them. When you hear your fans booing your own players - and I should add, rightfully so given what went on - it's not the way it's supposed to be,"

Doug Peterson Interview (FC New York)

William Smith from Big Apple Soccer has an interview with Doug Peterson, co-owner of FC New York who will join USL First Division play next season. Read the interview HERE.

The team’s ownership group, led by New York natives Jo-Ellen Treiber and Doug Petersen, announced their arrival during an April 1 press conference and are prepared to make a long-term impact on the New York soccer scene. In fact, they are working late into the night at it as this writer learned when Doug Peterson was good enough to respond to my submitted questions deep into the night via e-mail one evening last week. He and I discussed a variety of topics, which, for the benefit of the reader, was broken down into three topics:

* Off the field issues

* On the field issues

Austin Aztex Stadium News

A couple reports from Austin, Texas concerning a potential site for a new soccer stadium for the Austin Aztex of the USL First Division. Typical internet discussion breaks out on the Burnt Orange Report story as anti-soccer people begin bashing anything and everything about the sport and a potential stadium. Unfortunate, but common.

Goodbye Highland Mall, Hello... Aztex Stadium? Burnt Orange Report

Reactions to the stadium idea have been justifiably mixed. If folks' first reaction is like mine -- "We have a soccer team?!" -- then maybe there isn't a burgeoning need for the project. Many, many cities have been undertaking expensive stadium projects in the past few years, with troubling results. The cost of the stadium often results in unaffordable ticket prices and an over-reliance on corporate luxury boxes. If this recession continues, it's unclear if such a project is really viable in the short term.

Aztex Stadium/Aztex Station at Highland Mall The Austin Chronicle

Early neighborhood reaction to the concept of putting a soccer stadium at a redeveloped Highland Mall was … well, horrified more or less gets it. But this isn't Arlington Ballpark we're talking about here. Think Wrigley Field, maybe (on a much smaller scale, about 10,000 seats, 13,000 for concerts), with pedestrian-friendly street frontage in a mixed-use design, rapid bus transit and rail right across the street, and structured parking.

Quickstrike Lady Blues Remain Undefeated After 1-0 Win Over Connecticut

Official Press Release

NEWBURGH, NY – The Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues persevered to pull out a 1-0 victory over the Connecticut Passion on Friday night at Academy Field on the campus of Newburgh Free Academy.

Brittany Taylor scored the game’s only goal in the 56th minute when she settled an Ashleigh Gunning corner kick and placed the ball into the upper netting of the goal. The goal helped extend the Hudson Valley’s perfect start to the season to 5-0-0 (15 pts.).

Connecticut dominated possession throughout the first half and caught a flat Hudson Valley team on its heels. Forward Kerry Scalora found space behind the Quickstrike Lady Blues’ defense throughout the first half and provided threatening shots for the visitors in the 17th and 18th minutes.

She also gave the Quickstrike Lady Blues a scare on the stroke of halftime when another shot of hers went just wide. That ended a half in which the home side struggled to create opportunities.

“This is the professional level,” head coach Jesse Kolmel said. “You are not always going to play perfect every game. The big adjustment was tempo.”

The best chance of the first half for the Quickstrike Lady Blues came in the 38th minute when Mercede Koning crossed the ball to Ashleigh Gunning, who had her point-blank shot blocked by a sliding Connecticut defender.

Forward Angelika Johansson, the W-League’s leading scorer and reigning Player of the Week, started things off in the 47th minute with a shot that went just wide of the goal.

Koning then had a good look at goal just seconds before Taylor scored the game’s only goal in the 56th minute, which officially shifted the momentum toward the home side.

Two minutes later, forward Whitney Palmer utilized her speed to intercept the ball in the final third of the field but could not convert on a breakaway to double the lead.

Ashleigh Gunning also sent a free kick just wide in the 79th minute that could have sealed the game for the Quickstrike Lady Blues.

Connecticut and the Hudson Valley exchanged several physical challenges that resulted in a very rough game. It began when Lady Blues forward Kristen Edmonds was taken down in the box in 29th minute. No call was made by referee Ryan Dos Reis, although Edmonds did lay on the turf for several minutes with an apparent injury.

She would be alright, but the incident began what would be a very physical game. There were four yellow cards given out, three of which went to Connecticut.

“It was a very different game from what we have played before. It was physical and it wasn’t high pressure,” Taylor said.

The Quickstrike Lady Blues return home on Saturday, June 20 at 7 p.m. against the Western Mass Lady Pioneers. Coaches and players from Sky Blue FC, the professional affiliate of the Quickstrike Lady Blues, will be in attendance to take in the game and sign autographs for fans. In recognition of Father’s Day, all dads will get in free.

USL Stuck with Lousy CONCACAF Champions League Draw

Unless Toronto FC can defeat the Montreal Impact by 4 goals or more in the final match of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, the Vancouver Whitecaps and Puerto Rico Islanders will represent the USL in the 2009/10 CONCACAF Champions League...that's the good news. The bad news? Thanks to the CCL draw yesterday, either Toronto FC or Vancouver will face Puerto Rico is a preliminary round match, meaning at best, only one USL side can make the group stages.

Luck of the draw or did CONCACAF bow to FMF and MLS officials who were undoubtedly demanding more spots in the tournament for their FIFA sanctioned first division leagues?

No matter what, they should be fearing USL clubs after Puerto Rico and Montreal's outstanding performance in last season's tournament. Many will argue that USL clubs don't even belong in the tournament, but we feel that the league's performance has proven that the league deserves their place.

Read the official USL press release on the CCL draw HERE.
