Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues Improve to 3-0

Official Press Release

Lady Blues down Washington Freedom 4-2 to remain undefeated

The Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues went to 3-0-0 on the season Sunday after defeating defending W-League Northeast Division Champion Washington Freedom in front of 2,115 fans at Newburgh Free Academy.

Washington started off strong and claimed most of the possession. The Freedom’s Brittany Tegeler opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a looping shot that beat goalkeeper Ashley Thompson.

However, the Lady Blues responded immediately. After the ball pinged around in the box, Whitney Palmer’s header found forward Angelika Johannson, who slotted the ball home for the 30th minute equalizer.

Then, Campbell Hall, NY, native Brittany Taylor put the home side ahead on the stroke of halftime. Her 45th minute volley from 25 yards out was a laser that Freedom goalkeeper Alyssa Pont could only watch sail into the upper corner of the goal.

Head coach Jesse Kolmel was extremely impressed with the goal, as was the entire crowd.

“You can’t say enough about her,” he said. “That is one of our marquee players stepping up to the challenge and executing.”

That goal gave the Lady Blues a 2-1 lead going into halftime.

The Lady Blues started the half the way that they ended it when Whitney Palmer made a run in behind the Freedom defense. Pont came out to challenge Palmer, who tapped the ball around her and walked it into the net to give the Hudson Valley a 3-1 lead.

Palmer was a menace all night and wreaked havoc on the Washington defense, which could not keep up with her speed.

“Stepping out on the field tonight I think everybody went in with the mentality that we were going to win and we could get out there and work hard the entire game,” Palmer said. “So, I think our mentality was really good.”

Tegeler did pull one back for the Freedom. Her 75th minute chip shot beat Lady Blues goalkeeper Erin McNulty, who was a halftime substitute. That cut the Lady Blues lead to 3-2.

Unfortunately for Washington, Palmer’s speed was too much. She broke through the Freedom defense again in the 88th minute. When Pont came out to challenge her, Palmer tapped the ball around the Freedom goalkeeper and walked it into the net to ice the game and give the Lady Blues a 4-2 victory.

Kolmel was happy with the result, but realizes it is only one win. Washington was also playing its second game in less than 24 hours after beating the Long Island Lady Rough Riders 3-1 Saturday.

“There’s nothing to celebrate right now,” he said. “Our goal is not to beat the Freedom. Our goal is to move on to the playoffs so we have some work to do.”

Next up for the Lady Blues (3-0-0, 9 pts.) is the final game of a three game home stand against the Boston Renegades on Saturday, June 6 at 7 p.m.

Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues: Freedom Preview May 31st

Official Press Release

Lady Blues take on Freedom; Johannson honored by league

NEWBURG H, NY - The Hudson Valley Lady Blues will welcome defending W-League Northeast Division champion Washington Freedom to town Sunday for a critical matchup. The game kicks off at 5 p.m. at Academy Field on the campus of Newburgh Free Academy.

The Lady Blues (2-0-0, 6 pts.) enter the game undefeated after beating the New York Magic 6-0 last Saturday in front of over 1,000 fans. The game opened the home slate for the Lady Blues, who won their season opener against Western Mass two weeks ago on the road by a score of 3-1.

Angelika Johannson scored four of the six goals against New York to give her five on the season. Her efforts earned her a spot on the W-League Team of the Week, narrowly missing out on earning player of the week honors to Buffalo’s Maria Ruiz.

She joins the company of teammate Ashleigh Gunning, who was named to last week’s W-League Team of the Week for her efforts in the 3-1 win against Western Mass, which included a stunning goal from 25 yards out.

Currently, Washington has played only one game, defeating the Boston Renegades 1-0 on May 9. The Freedom will play the Long Island Lady Rough Riders on Saturday night and then travel up to Newburgh for the showdown with the Lady Blues.

From whitecapsfc.com - Read the full report HERE.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC claimed their second win in the 2009 Nutrilite Canadian Championship following a 1-0 home victory over Montreal Impact on Wednesday evening.

Ethan Gage's first-ever goal for the Whitecaps men's team pulled the USL First Division champions into a first-place tie with Major League Soccer club Toronto FC at the top of the three-club Canadian Championship standings. The result also sets up an important final tournament match for the Blue and White, as they host TFC at Swangard Stadium next Tuesday night. Defeat for the Impact, meanwhile, ends their reign as Voyageurs Cup holders after Montreal had initially won the inaugural edition of the tournament last year.

Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues Weekly Update: May 26

Official Press Release

NEWBURGH, NY – The last ten days have been very busy for the Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues. After opening the season with a 3-1 win over Western Mass on the road last Saturday, May 16, the Lady Blues kicked off their home schedule with a bang on Saturday, beating the New York Magic 6-0.

Swedish forward Angelika Johansson scored four goals in the game, giving her five on the season, and helped lead the Hudson Valley (2-0-0, 6 pts.) to the resounding victory.

Midfielder Kristen Edmonds also scored a goal, and the sixth goal was accounted for with an own goal off of a New York Magic defender.

The game was the home opener for the Lady Blues, who began a three game homes stand at Academy Field at Newburgh Free Academy in front of 1,075 fans. The crowd was the third largest of the season thus far in the W-League.

On Sunday, May 31, the Lady Blues will host defending W-League Northeast Division champion Washington Freedom. The game kicks off at 5 p.m. at Academy Field.

Gunning Honored

Defender Ashleigh Gunning was named to the W-League Team of the Week for her performance in the 3-1 win over Western Mass. Gunning helped anchor the backline that kept Western Mass in check all night, and scored a beautiful goal from 25 yards out on an overlapping run.

“I am sure that there were not too many other goals scored that were better than Gunning’s goal, but more importantly I am pleased with her accomplishments because she was able to follow our directions at halftime,” Head Coach Jesse Kolmel said. “We wanted her to get up and support the attack and be our playmaker.”

Lady Blues to Hit Airwaves this Week

The Lady Blues will be hitting the airwaves this week in an effort to continue to involve themselves in the community and promote Sunday’s critical matchup with the Washington Freedom.

On Wednesday, Ashleigh Gunning will appear on Good Morning Hudson Valley with host Bruce Owens at 6:20 a.m. The show airs simultaneously on 1260 WBNR and WLNA 1420.

On Friday, several members of the team will appear on K104’s morning show, Woodman in the Morning with Woodman, Tory Grace and Bill Beale. The Lady Blues will be on the region’s premier radio destination at 8 a.m. Fans can tune in at frequency 104.7 FM.

Also, fans can check out highlights of Saturday night’s game on the Cable 6 news at 5:30 p.m.

90 Seconds with…Angelika Johansson

The following feature ran in Saturday’s game day program and media guide. Each week, a different Lady Blue will be profiled:

Angelika Johansson
Forward
Franklin Pierce University
Falkenberg, Sweden

Favorite Food: Pasta

Worst Food: Liver

Favorite Player: Thierry Henry

Favorite Team: Arsenal

Favorite Childhood Memory: One time when me and my sister went down to the beach for the first time by ourselves and we were just running around. It was so big.

Embarrassing Moment: The first day I came to my school at Franklin Pierce. Our first practice I was so sure that I was on the orange team but I was actually on the green team so I just took the ball and went to score on the wrong goal. Everyone was just standing and laughing in my first practice in the United States.

What got you into soccer? My dad played soccer and I got my first soccer ball when I was five years old and I did everything to play.

What brought you over from Sweden? My coach played for Franklin Pierce before so she recommended me.

What is the fan culture like in Sweden? Here soccer seems like both the men’s and women’s games. In Europe I would say it is the men’s game. I feel like you get more response here.

How are you liking the adjustment? It is very different in the system we play. It’s more physical here than in Sweden. It fits how I play better.

OP/ED: Don't Panic!

Not that anyone is panicking, but in times of uncertainty and concern about something you follow and support, there is always a natural tendency to feel like having a good panic. In the last week, rumors have been flying about the possibility of USL-1 folding, the remaining teams that haven't been absorbed by MLS merging with USL-2, or even the possibility of an MLS-2 forming.

USL supporters...Don't Panic.

The USL First Division isn't going anywhere, and while getting on the same page with MLS and the US Soccer Federation about becoming a FIFA recognized second division might be a topic worth debating, in my estimations, there is no need to worry. USL fills a niche, a rather large one actually, that MLS can't even begin to fill. Markets unable or unwilling to support an MLS franchise are ideal places to have USL teams, allowing soccer fans to have a club to support that fits the market from a financial viability standpoint. In some cases, there are cities and/or regions that can support multiple soccer clubs from multiple leagues and divisions...and there's nothing wrong with that.

While I'm sure no USL supporter likes the idea of MLS poaching the leagues biggest and most successful clubs, in a way its good for the health of American club soccer as a whole. USL clubs like Vancouver, Portland and Montreal have proven that soccer can succeed in their markets (not to mention Seatte) and in doing so, MLS is able to expand into an area that will support the team and the league. It alleviates the risk of blindly expanding into a market and having the team fail or struggle. We have to put our loyalties and other issues aside and remember that the ultimate goal is for the sport of soccer to be successful here in America.

This viewpoint may not be popular with everyone, but for me it speaks to the need for MLS and the USL to get on the same page in some form. Each league has things that could benefit the other and having an organized and well supported multi-tier club soccer system would be good for the leagues, investors and fans alike. Even if you don't adopt promotion and relegation, just having everyone working towards the same goal would be beneficial for the long-term health of the sport in America.

So to reiterate, it's not time to panic, but it is definitely time to think about the future.

P.S. - The answer is 42.

Tampa Bay Stadium Update

According to the new Tampa Bay Rowdies website (www.tbrowdies.com):

The Rowdies will play in a centrally located stadium to be built in northwest Hillsborough County, with easy access from Pinellas and Pasco counties. The stadium will feature approximately 5,500 seats and 16 luxury suites. Detailed plans and renderings will be shared here in the next few months.

Over the weekend in an article on Tampa Bay Online (www.tbo.com) claims that Pasco County and the Rowides ownership group are discussing the possibility of a stadium deal. According to our source, the deal would leave a long drive for Hillsborough and Pinellas County soccer fans.

While teams ultimately have to go where they can get a favorable stadium deal, a move to Pasco County could create support and attendance issue for the new club.

Match Report: Carolina 2-0 Over Miami FC

A crowd of 1,875 at Lockhart Stadium saw the high flying Carolina Railhawks continue their march up the USL-1 table with a victory over Miami FC. Early in the first half Miami FC maintained a decent amount of possession. Edwin Miranda made some nice early runs and played a few daring balls into the area.

Carolina took control of the match around the 15th minute and never looked back. Daniel Paladini beat Patt Hannigan in minute 25, but was unlucky to hit the ball off the woodwork. The Railhawks Jack Stewart who suffered an ankle injury late in the first half was instrumental in controlling the play in midfield.

Miami FC hit Carolina on a counter in minute 31 with Diego Serna playing a fabulous through ball to Allen Marcina but the Blues striker couldn’t finish. Miami FC was wasteful in the area all night much as they have been the previous several matches.

Carolina once again asserted control of the match and Luke Kreamalmeyer finished well on a good ball Gavin Glinton in minute 38 for the goal, giving the Railhawks a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Blues never looked particularly threatening in the second half creating a few half chances but finally being beat by Luke Kreamalmeyer again in minute 58 when Patt Hannigan came up tangled and flat footed in the Miami FC goal. This gave the Railhawks a 2-0 lead and the inside track on three valuable away points.

From that point forward Carolina dominated the match and in minute 70 when Diego Serna was sent off, the match was over for all intents and purposes. Endozien Connally hit the post in stoppage time but that was the only real threat from Miami FC late.

The Railhawks continue their road trip next week with trips to Cleveland and Austin next week. Miami FC begins a long road trip in Charleston on Wednesday against the Battery.

Puerto Rico Qualify for CONCACAF Champions League

Last night in Trinidad, the Puerto Rico Islanders recorded a 2-0 semifinal win in the CFU Final Four over Haitian Champions Tempete. The match was scoreless after 90 minutes. Kendall Jagdeosingh scored the winning goal on a cross from Scott Jones early in extra time and Peter Villegas scored another later to provide the margin for victory. Tempete had a man sent off towards the end of regular time. This victory clinches the Islanders participation in the 2009-2010 CONCACAF Champions League. It will be the Islanders second consecutive appearance in the most prestigious North American club event.

The Islanders will face W Connection of Trindad and Tobago in the final Sunday. This will represent a hostile road atmosphere for the Islanders but after the USL-1 side advanced to the semifinals of the recently completed inaugural CONCACAF Champions League, Colin Clarke’s men are very much used to playing in difficult away environments. The Islanders lost a PK shootout that could have sent them through to the finals.

Colin Clarke has also developed a deep side which allows the Islanders to cope well in several competitions at once. After encountering a stretch with 17 games in 50 days last season, Clarke spent the most recent closed season making his squad deeper. The Islanders great run in CONCACAF perhaps cost the club the 2008 USL First Division Championship as the extra matches took a toll on the squad. The team struggled to get by Rochester at the semifinal stage and then lost in the final versus Vancouver while making its way through group play in CONCACAF.

This offseason the Islanders signed MLS veterans Kyle Veris and Dominic Mediate, both of whom have extensive international experience, Veris with the LA Galaxy in the 2007 Superliga and from playing in Europe, Mediate from playing in several big tournaments for DC United. Both featured late in Puerto Rico's recent CONCACAF CL run and figure to play key reserve roles in this year's Champions League.

Tampa Bay Rowdies Sued

A Texas company called Classic Ink has sued the owners of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, the USL First Division expansion team, along with the two companies marketing Tampa Bay Rowdies apparel for trademark infringement.

Classic Ink claims that the former owner of C.S. Anderson Enterprises (the company that became Classic Ink) executed a false assignment of the Tampa Bay Rowdies trademark to the new team's owners. Now Classic Ink says that that former owner had no right to do so and thus the expansion team is in violation of trademark law.

This lawsuit is in the very early stages and oddly merchandise sales at http://www.tbrowdies.com/merchandise/ have been stopped. However merchandise is still available for sale at http://www.teamip.com/c/198141/1/tampa-bay-rowdies.html

Tampa Bay ownership is refusing to comment on the lawsuit but USLNews will follow the story closely and bring you any news related to the situation.

First up from Kartik, check out this LINK to hear MLS Talk #79 in which Kartik interviews Dan Duggen, chairman of the Michigan Bucks.

Michigan Bucks Chairman Dan Duggan joins host Kartik Krishnaiyer for a timely discussion as the PDL season begins. We discuss the history of the Bucks including several deep US Open Cup runs between 1999 and 2002, the 2006 PDL title, and the number of big name USMNT, MLS and USL players whose careers have started with the Bucks. We also talk about possible MLS and USL-1 expansion in the Detroit market, the largest North American metropolitan area without a MLS or USL-1 franchise.

Second, here's a slightly dated podcast from Kartik but still worth checking out for all USL fans. This episode is hosted by Kartik Brian Quarstad from Inside Mn Soccer. Guest include Rod Underwood and Ignacio Rodriguez

Press Release: Montreal Impact Name Interim Head Coach

Official Press Release

MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact announced the nomination of Marc Dos Santos as interim head coach of the Impact on Thursday, to succeed John Limniatis in this role.
“After having analyzed the situation over the last few months, we have realized that the team was not playing to its level and that the positive results were not there,” said Impact technical director Nick De Santis. “The message was no longer getting through in the locker room. John will nevertheless remain in the Impact family and he continues to be one of our great team builders.”

Marc Dos Santos was the assistant coach of the Impact since June 10, 2008. He was also the head coach of the reserve team, the Trois-Rivières Attak, for two seasons, in 2007 and 2008. Dos Santos took training internships with three first division clubs in Portugal: Boavista FC (November 2004), SC Beira Mar (November 2004) and FC Porto (March 2007). He has the UEFA B licence since July 2006 and is currently in the process of obtaining his UEFA A licence.

“It’s an honour for me to become interim head coach for the Impact,” said Marc Dos Santos. “I am ready today to take on these new responsibilities. It’s a great challenge in my coaching career and it’s a mandate in which I will invest myself fully. I have acquired a solid experience in the last years with the Impact and the Attak, as well as in Portugal. I will do everything I can for the team to be successful again.”

Dos Santos will count on three assistant coaches: Andrea Di Pietrantonio, who held the same functions last season, Mauro Biello, who becomes player-coach, and Youssef Dahha, who remains goalkeeper coach.

John Limniatis became Impact head coach on June 10, 2008, succeeding to Nick De Santis who in turn became technical director. In his first season at the helm of the team, he led the Impact to the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals and to the semifinals of the USL series. In 2009, the team had not won in its first four regular season games (0-3-1) and was shut out 1-0 by Toronto FC, Wednesday, in its first game of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship.

Dos Santos becomes the eighth head coach in Impact history. He will coach his first game at the helm of the team this Friday, when the Impact will face the Charleston Battery at 7:30 pm (Radio-Canada, CKAC Sports, TEAM 990, USLlive.com).

Rumor: UMBRO Unhappy with USL Revenues?

UMBRO International, Inc., the majority owner of the United Soccer Leagues is apparently not pleased with the amount of money being made by the league. No confirmation as to whether UMBRO intends to sell their majority shares of USL or if they will push the league to find new sponsor(s) with the goal of adding title sponsor(s) to the top two divisions in a major rebranding move for the league. Our source also hinted that while nothing is in the works or even imminent, there are rumblings that Adidas could enter the picture in the future.

How would you feel about USL selling "title sponsorships" to their top two divisions along the lines of the Sprint Cup Series in NASCAR or the Barclay's Premier League? Would UMBRO selling their control of the league be a good or bad thing?
