Rough Riders Women Victors in Home Finale, Dominate NY Magic 4-1
Official Press Release (Long Island Rough Riders)
Plainview, NY (July 11, 2009) – In their final home game of the 2009 W-League season, the Long Island Rough Riders women’s team defeated the New York Magic 4-1.
Sixteen minutes into the first half, the Rough Riders (6-6-1, 19 pts.) took control of the game. Molly Dreska sent a thru ball past the Magic defense and Captain Kerri McCabe beat the off-side trap, deked around goalkeeper Alicia Defino and slid the ball into the back of the net for the early lead.
Just three minutes later, Kelly McConnell dribbled past one defender and unleashed a shot from 20 yards out that found the upper right corner and just like that the Rough Riders were up two goals.
Early in the second half, McConnell sent a ball down the left wing for McCabe who coolly dribbled around Defino and fired a shot into the empty goal to extend the lead to three.
In the 82nd minute, McConnell was at it again, adding her second assist of the night setting up Dreska for the 4-0 lead. New York (1-8-3, 7 pts.) would answer back two minutes later, but it would be too little, too late for the Magic.
The Rough Riders women will end their season next Sunday, July 19th when they travel south to take on the Washington Freedom and the Maryland Soccer Complex.
The Rough Riders men will play the Westchester Flames on Wednesday, July 15th in their regular-season finale before the 2009 PDL playoffs begin. Any kids under the age of 14 who wear a soccer jersey will receive a free ticket to that night’s game.
